One of the original seven men chosen to be a U.S. astronaut, John Glenn was the first American to orbit the Earth. A former Marine Corps pilot in both World War II and the Korean War, Glenn became an astronaut in 1959. On February 20th, 1962, Glenn circled the globe three times aboard the Friendship 7 and 4 hours 56 minutes later splashed down in the Atlantic Ocean. Glenn resigned from the space program in 1964 and entered politics. In 1974 his home state of Ohio elected the space hero to the U.S. Senate. He was reelected again in 1980, 1986, 1992.
