"You cannot make a revolution with silk gloves."
Joseph Stalin was the unchallenged Russian leader from 1929 until his death in 1953. He turned Russia into a great industrial
country, helped defeat Hitler in World War II and after 1945
established Communist regimes throughout eastern Europe. He changed Communism in the Soviet Union from a revolutionary movement into a mainstream bureaucratic government system. Though Stalin ranks as one of the towering politicians of his era, he is also denounced as a despot who instituted change through a reign of terror. It is estimated that Stalin was responsible for the death and deprivation of tens of millions of people.
