King Hussein I of Jordan is the son of Crown Prince Talal and grandson of King Abdullah. He was made crown prince in 1951 when his father ascended to the throne and sent to study at Harrow in England. He was proclaimed King on August 11, 1952 at the tender age of seventeen, when his father was removed from the throne because of mental illness. But Hussein, who was still a minor, had to first attend the Royal Military College at Sandhurst, England. before being enthroned on May 2, 1953. Hussein lost possession of all territory west of the Jordan river when his army was defeated by Israel during the 1967 Israeli-Arab war. In 1970 Hussein drove the Palestine Liberation Organization out of Jordan, as he considered them a threat to his throne. In 1978, Hussein married his second wife Elizabeth Halaby, an American who is now known as Queen Noor.
