Konrad Audenauer was Chancellor of the new Federal Republic of Germany from 1949 till his retirement in 1963. A lawyer, economist and devout Roman Catholic, Audenauer started his political career in 1906 when he was elected mayor of Cologne. The Nazis dismissed him from public office in 1933 and harassed him until the end of World War II. The Americans reinstated him as lord mayor of Cologne and Audenauer soon became active in the new Christian Democratic Union, which eventually led to his election as Chancellor.
