"The younger generation doesn't want equality and regimentation, but opportunity to shape the world while showing compassion to those in real need."
Margaret Thatcher, born Margaret Roberts, became Great Britain's first woman Prime Minister in May 1979. She had been Conservative party leader since 1975. As Prime Minister, "the Iron Lady" as she was nicknamed, embarked on a domestic program that differed greatly from any Labour or Conservative governments before her. She privatized numerous government owned businesses, cut tax rates and curbed union power. Unemployment doubled during her first three years in office, but she won reelection because of Great Britain's victory in the 1982 Falkland war. She kept close ties with the Reagan administration and despite England's economic depression, won a third term in office, making her the longest-serving British Prime Minister of the 20th century.
