Martin Luther King Jr., clergyman and civil rights leader during much of the 1950s and 1960s, was the son and grandson of Baptist ministers. In his approach to civil rights, he was strongly influenced by Mahatma Gandhi, who taught independence through nonviolent means. King led numerous demonstrations, was frequently arrested and never far away from death. In 1963, At a massive demonstration in Washington, King delivered the now famous "I Have A Dream" speech. Early in 1968, King organized a "poor people's campaign," during which he hoped to bring the plight of the poor to the forefront. While plans for the campaign were being finalized, King flew to Memphis to lead yet another strike. As he was talking to his aides on the balcony of the Lorraine Hotel, King was shot and killed by James Earl Ray.
