During Israel's independence struggle in the mid 1940s, this passionate man led the Irgun terrorist organization, which launched bloody attacks on British officials and Arab civilians. After Israel's independence in 1948, Begin became chairman of the Herut party and by 1965 he had become opposition leader in the Knesset (Israeli parliament). Begin was Prime Minister of Israel from 1977 to 1983. With President Carter's help, Menachem Begin and President Sadat negotiated peace between Israel and Egypt, for which the two leaders shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 1978.
