He was a powerful man, who came from humble origins, working his way up through the ranks of the Communist Party. During his tenure, he displayed enormous enthusiasm and energy towards changing the Soviet Union and the system itself. His goal was to bring the living standard in the Soviet Union up to par with the West. But in October 1964, after many of his plans and attempts had gone awry, Khrushchev was stripped of his power and dismissed as party Secretary.
