"Why did we take our action against Kuwait? We took our actions because the ruling family in Kuwait is good at blackmail, exploitation, and destruction of their opponents. They had perpetuated a grave U.S. conspiracy against us -- stabbing Iraq in the back with a poisoned dagger."
Saddam Hussein was President of Iraq from 1979 to 2004. In 1959 Saddam tried to assassinate the premier of Iraq. He studied law in Egypt and returned to Baghdad in 1963 when the Baath party took control. He was imprisoned in 1964 when the government was overthrown, but named deputy chairman of the Revolutionary Command Council in 1964, when the Baath regained power. Through intimidation, military purges and tactical maneuvering, he rose to the presidency in 1979. He invaded Iran in 1980, resulting in an eight-year war, which cost thousands of lives and billions of dollars. Iraq's economic reconstruction had only just begun when Hussein invaded Kuwait in 1990.
