Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor is the 102nd member and the first woman to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court. O'Connor received her law degree from Stanford University. She was assistant attorney general of Arizona from 1965 to 1968 and was appointed to the Arizona state senate in 1969, from where she rose to senate majority leader. In July 1981, President Ronald Reagan fulfilled his campaign pledge and appointed a woman (Sandra Day O'Connor) to the Supreme Court to fill the vacancy left by retiring judge Potter Stewart. O'Connor is known as a scrupulous legal scholar.
