The son of a doctor, Warren Gamaliel Harding became state senator in 1900, lieutenant governor in 1904 U.S. senator in 1915. He supported Taft and opposed Wilson. He was nominated for and went on to become America's 29th President in 1920 by defeating Democrat James Cox. Harding capitalized on the fact that America was tired of war. He opposed the League of Nations, stressing that America needed to return to normalcy and that such a league might curtail U.S. sovereignty. At the end of Harding's term, two of his appointees became involved in the Teapot Dome scandal, souring his last days in office. He died before completing his term and was succeeded by Calvin Coolidge.
