William Jennings Bryan was known as the "Great Commoner", since he intuitively understood the feelings of the common man and was able to articulate them eloquently. He acted as the conscience of the nation, consistently opposing favoritism of privileged groups. Democrat William Jennings Bryan campaigned three times for the U.S. presidency and was defeated every time. But he forever remained an active political, moral and religious crusader and many of Bryan's proposals and referenda did eventually become law.
