Yasir Arafat was an Arab guerilla leader and head of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). Born in Jerusalem, Arafat fled to Gaza during the Palestine War in 1948. He received commando training in Egypt after his education at the University of Cairo. He helped found the al-Fatah resistance movement in 1956 and became its and the PLO's leader in 1964.
