The African continent consists of over 11 million square miles and has a wide range of climates ranging from the Sahara Desert, to savannas and equatorial rain forests and dense jungles. The largest river in Africa is the Nile and its highest point is the 19,565 foot Mt. Kilimanjaro. Africa is the site of man's earliest and most ancient cultures. Europeans began exploring and invading Africa in the 15th century following Diaz' successful voyage around the Cape of Good Hope in 1488. Large scale colonization by European nations continued into the 20th century including colonies ruled by Great Britain, France, Portugal, Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, and Italy. By the late 1960's most African nations had achieved independence.
