The name Alps is supposedly derived from the Celtic word "Alb", disputed to mean either "white" or "height". No matter what its name, this glorious European mountain range extends from France into Switzerland, Austria and northern Italy. Its highest peak is Mont Blanc, which is located on the border of France and Italy and nicknamed the "Monarch of Mountains" by Lord Byron. Mont Blanc is the highest mountain in Europe and rises 15,871 feet above sea level. The second highest in the mountain range is Monte Rosa, towering 15,203 feet. The Matterhorn, situated between Switzerland and Italy (14,691 feet) is the most photographed as it is said to resemble a huge "rearing horse".
