"In the past 40 years over half of the world's rain forests have been destroyed."

The largest tropical rain forest in the world is the forest of the Amazon Basin. Located near the equator, the heat of the ever present sun combined with moist sea air causes torrential rain almost every day. This lush jungle, which is rich in both animal and plant life, covers some 815 million acres. Home of the Amazon River, which extends over 3,500 miles, the rain forest of Brazil and South America are being destroyed at an alarming rate. Toucans, tree sloths, tarantulas, parrots, iguanas, and spider monkeys are just a few of the great variety of animals living in the forest. Today, man is destroying the rain forest and the only habitat for these animals.
