THE BAHAMAS
North America
700 islands totaling 5,400 sq. mi.

"At two hours after midnight appeared the land, at a distance of 2 leagues. They handed all sails and set the treo, which is the mainsail without bonnets, and lay-to waiting for daylight Friday, when they arrived at an island of the Bahamas that was called in the Indians' tongue Guanahani." Christopher Columbus.

Christopher Columbus first set foot on Sal Salvador, which is now known as Watling Island in the Bahamas. Spain made no use of the island. In 1647 Britain colonized the islands. During the American Civil War the Bahamas islands -- which lie about 50 miles east of Florida and stretch over 760 miles past the northern coast of Cuba -- prospered because of blockade-running trade between England and the Confederate ports. In 1940 a US Air Force base was established on Great Exuma island, where many fighter pilots were trained during World War II. In 1973, the Bahamas became independent of the Commonwealth. Tourism is the Bahamas main source of income.
