"The Venice of the East."

Bangkok, Thailand's largest city and port situated on the bend of the Chao Phraya River, has many khlongs or canals and is sometimes referred to as "The Venice of the East." Bangkok was established in 1782 by Thailand's ruler Rama I, when he moved across the river and built the Grand Palace (1785) and the first Buddhist temple Wat Phra Keo (Temple of the Emerald Buddha). Bangkok was modernized during the reign of Rama IV (1851-1868) and modernization was continued by his successor Rama V. Despite its many modern buildings, Bangkok exudes an oriental atmosphere with its 400 beautiful Buddhist temples -- such as the Wat Arun (the temple of Dawn), and the Wat Po (the temple of the Reclining Buddha) -- with its pedicabs crowding the streets and its produce vendors in small boats peddling their wares at the floating market.
