"All free men, wherever they may live, are citizens of Berlin..." President John F. Kennedy, Address at City Hall, 1963

The German city of Berlin, which was once the capital of Brandenburg, of Prussia and of unified Germany, was destroyed during World War II and subsequently fell victim to a dispute between the victorious Allies. After the June 1948 Communist blockade, a successful Berlin airlift left West Berlin free, but led to more East-West tension and the eventual 1961 physical separation of East and West Berlin by the famous Berlin Wall. West Berlin became a political enclave and saw its governmental headquarters transferred to Bonn. Tragic separation of families led many to try to cross the heavily guarded Wall. It took many lives and almost 30 years, until November 1989 -- when a new East German government committed to radical change was in place -- for the Wall to come down and the two Germanys to be united again. Berlin is slowly reverting to the economic and cultural center it once was.
