"Boston is a state of mind." Mark Twain

Boston was settled in 1630 on a hilly peninsula where the Charles River flows into the Atlantic Ocean and took its name from Boston in Lincolnshire, England, a town dear to the English Puritans. For the deeply religious community of the 1700s, Boston was a place of independence where prosperity reigned and where the best minds were tested in the meeting house, the church or Harvard College in nearby Cambridge. When harsh taxes were imposed by the British upon the Bostonians in the mid 1770's, they protested strongly. This series of protests culminated in 1775 with a tea tax. The colonial reaction was to throw the tea -- their favorite luxury item -- into the Boston Harbor. The event went down in history as "The Boston Tea Party." Though Boston has grown into the busiest American seaport, many of the old parts of Boston, Beacon Hill and the North End in particular, are preserved as national monuments. Among them are State House on Beacon Hill built in 1795 and Faneuil Hall "the cradle of liberty" built in 1742 as a market and meeting place for the colonists.
