CHICAGO

Illinois, U.S.
Founded circa 1770

"O great city of visions, waging the war of the free Beautiful, strong and alert, a goddess in purpose and mine." Wallace Rice, Chicago.

Geography played an important role in the development of Chicago, which, situated on Lake Michigan, became a natural trading port in the early 1800s. Chicago derives its name from the Indian word "chicagou" meaning "strong or "powerful". Though a large part of the city was destroyed by the Great Fire of 1871, Chicago courageously started over again. A better city plan was devised and businesses were quickly rebuilt. Today, Chicago is America's third most populated city. With over 3 million people in town and more than 7 million people in its metropolitan area, the city exerts major national influence over manufacturing, trade and finance. The Chicago skyline has three of the world's tallest buildings: the Sears Tower (1454 feet), the Standard Oil (Indiana) Building (1,136 feet), and the John Hancock Center (1,127 feet).
