The word pyramid is possibly an ancient Egyptian word, but today it is thought to have Greek roots, referring to a cake-like structure with triangular sides that rises to a peak from a square, rectangular or triangular base. The most famous man-made pyramids can be found in Egypt and were constructed out of limestone as burial places for the Egyptian pharaohs of the Old Kingdom (2664-2180 B.C.). The three largest Egyptian pyramids are in Giza and are thought to be the tombs of Kings Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure. At 755 feet, Khufu's pyramid is the largest. It is estimated that it took 100,000 men about 20 years of work during the Nile's flood season. Each pyramid contains 2.3 million blocks of sandstone, covered with the same amount of fine white limestone. Other, much smaller tombs, were built over the next 2500 years and can be found not only in Egypt and Nubia, but also in Mexico, Central America and Peru.
