"Galapagos is Spanish for tortoises."

The Galapagos islands, which are Ecuadorian territory, can be found in the Pacific Ocean some 600 miles off the west coast of South America. They are composed of a group of sixteen mostly rough volcanic islands. Many of the islands were given names by British whalers and later given Spanish names by Ecuador such as Isabela, Santa Cruz and San Cristobal. Isabela is the largest island, while San Cristobal houses the administrative center for a population of less than 7,000 people. The Galapagos Islands are now under the administration of the Ecuadorian National Park Service in an attempt to save the archipelago's unusually rich wildlife, particularly the Galapagos Tortoise, which is one of the world's largest tortoises and can weigh up to 500 pounds.
