The Golden Gate Bridge is the second longest suspension bridge in the world and spans the one-mile long Golden Gate strait between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay. The $35 million bridge, which has a 4,200 foot span and a total length of 8,981 feet, was started in 1933 and completed by 1937 under the supervising eye of chief engineer Joseph B. Strauss. Its steel towers, each 746 feet high, are the tallest bridge towers in the world. The Golden Gate Bridge connects San Francisco with Marin county.
