China's Great Wall and signature landmark, is the longest defensive barrier ever built. It stretches some 1500 miles from Shanhaiguan on the Yellow Sea to Jiayuguan in the Kansu province. Most of the present wall dates from the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). It was predominantly built of rubble, though some sections are made of tamped earth, while important passes were made of brick. Watchtowers were set at regular intervals, but the purpose of the wall, which was to protect the empire from northern "barbarians" often failed.
