Athens, Greece's largest city and capital, was the cultural center of the Mediterranean world at the height of its golden age in 400 B.C. Today Athens, with a population of two and a half million people, is still the economic hub of Greece and its port of Piraeus is one of the busiest in the region. Nonetheless, history is everywhere. Athens is full of monuments from the pre-classical, classical, Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine periods. The Acropolis, crowned by the majestic Parthenon, lies high above the modern city. The Parthenon, built in the 5th century B.C. by ancient Athenians, is a model of classic architectural purity, while The Erechtheum (about 408 B.C.) on the north side of the Acropolis, is the best preserved monument of Greek Ionic architecture.
