The Hoover Dam, initially called the Boulder Dam, was started in 1931. Its construction vastly stimulated the Las Vegas economy, first by using its labor force and later by providing Las Vegas with an abundance of cheap electric power. The Hoover Dam is the highest concrete arch dam in the United States. Besides providing flood control and water for irrigation to 1 million acres of the Southwest, its 17 generators deliver 6 billion kilowatt-hours of electric energy to Arizona, Nevada and Southern California. The dam was completed in 1935, dedicated by President Roosevelt and pronounced one of the nation's seven modern wonders.
