"L.A. is a great big freeway." Hal David

When one thinks of Los Angeles, one can't help but think of Hollywood, of fame and fortune, of glitz and stars. Los Angeles is indeed the center of the entertainment industry, with Universal Studios and the Hollywood sign to prove it, but this heavily populated Southern California city is also a significant center of manufacturing, commerce, ocean shipping and finance. Los Angeles which started as a sleepy pueblo with vast orange groves, was founded in 1781 by Felipe de Neve who named it El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora La Reina de los Angeles. Since then Los Angeles has become the crossroad of immigrants arriving from all over the world in search of Southern California's sunny climate and outdoor life. A vast freeway system connects the different parts of this horizontal city, where automobile transportation is a way of life.
