"Montreal is the largest city in Canada."

Montreal is a city where two cultures, one French and one British-Canadian, coexist in a difficult but long-standing union. The mixture of people came about when many people immigrated from all parts of Europe after World War II. With its 1.2 million inhabitants, Montreal now ranks as the second (after Paris) largest French speaking city in the world. On Place d'Armes in Le Quartier, as old Montreal is referred to, stands the Church of Notre Dame de Montreal. Built in 1820, it is one of Canada's largest Gothic cathedrals and has an unusual carved-wood interior. Nearby the church is Montreal's oldest structure, Seminary of St. Sulpice, built in 1683.
