Capital of Russia

"The flames of Moscow were the aurora of the liberty of the world." Benjamin Constant.

Moscow, which is built on both sides of the Moskva River, owes its strong position in the Russian economy to its central position in the nation's transport system. The city consists of an Inner City, a Middle Zone and an Outer Zone and currently has 7.8 million inhabitants. Napoleon invaded Russia in 1812 and fire destroyed a large part of Moscow. On Red Square in the Inner City stands the Kremlin, the first settlement built under the reign of Ivan III (1485-1495) with its Spasskaya Tower rising over the Lenin Mausoleum. The Kremlin is the formal seat of government and reflects Russia's history of czars and the sacred authority of the Russian Orthodox Church. Next to the Kremlin is the exotic St. Basil's Cathedral, built under Ivan the Terrible. Kitai Gorod, still a part of the Inner City, was the first extension after the Kremlin, followed by The Garden Ring. Moscow has a highly efficient subway system built in the early 1930s, which transports people to the Middle and Outer Zones of the city.
