Mount Rushmore, located in the Black Hills in the Southwestern part of South Dakota, is a spectacular sculpture carved out of a granite mountainside portraying Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt. The sculpture came about as a suggestion by Doane Robinson in 1923, who was director of the South Dakota Historical Society and the mountain was established as a national memorial on October 1, 1925. The work was designed by Gutzon Borglum in 1927 and continued by his son Lincoln after Borglum's death in 1941. Each presidential face is about 60 feet high.
