"Give my regards to Broadway." George M. Cohan

New York, the capital of capitals, had its humble beginnings in 1626 when Peter Minuit bought it from the Indians for 25 dollars in trinkets and goods and named it New Amsterdam. In 1664, the British captured it from the Dutch and renamed it New York, in honor of the Duke of York. Today, with almost 8 million inhabitants in its five boroughs, New York City is the largest city in the United States. It is a vertical metropolis of cement, filled with skyscrapers, such as the Empire State Building. It houses the headquarters of the United Nations and has many legendary streets: Wall Street for finance, Broadway for theater, Madison Avenue for advertising, to name but a few. It has the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, Greenwich Village and Chinatown. But New York City, the city that never sleeps, is a place of many contrasts. It may have the finest homes, hotels and shops, but it also has its share of homelessness and decay. Despite its problems, though, those loyal to The Big Apple, as New York likes to call itself, claim it's the best place in the world!
