Though Niagara Falls are only the 49th highest water falls in the world, they have the world's 3rd largest amount of water flowing over them. Niagara Falls, an Indian name which means "thundering waters", was created some 12,000 years ago, when the waters of Lake Algonquin, which is now called Lake Erie, overflowed. The falls are located about midpoint on the Niagara River. Just above this point the river flows around Goat Island and divides into two channels. On the American side, the falls drop an amazing 1,050 feet. Four people have braved the falls. The first was Annie Edson Taylor on October 24, 1901.
