SAN FRANCISCO

California, U.S.

"East is East, and West is San Francisco, according to Californians." O. Henry

By 1847 the frontier town of Yerba Buena was renamed San Francisco, but it wasn't until the discovery of gold in the Sierra foothills in 1848 that San Francisco experienced its first rush. By 1850 so many immigrants had arrived that the population swelled to 35,000. In the 20th century, San Francisco has maintained itself as the financial, transportation and cultural center of Northern California, despite the disastrous earthquake and fire in 1906 and the more recent earthquake in 1989. San Francisco Bay is a thriving harbor with The Golden Gate Bridge at its entrance. San Francisco is noted for its beautiful setting, its rolling hills, its cable cars which climb up and down its steep streets, its colorful Chinatown, which is the largest Chinese quarter outside Asia, and the former high-security Alcatraz prison on Alcatraz Island in the San Francisco Bay.
